The design is inspired by an original English hexagonal quill-work tea caddy, c.1800 (see final image).
Historically, a tea caddy was a small, often ornate container for storing tea. In the 18th century, when tea was an expensive luxury, caddies were kept locked and displayed prominently. By the late Georgian era, richly veneered examples in mahogany or rosewood were especially popular, while larger versions were known as tea chests.
